Downgrading (1) When some portion on the delivery route is not IMA- compliant, –Bounce mail to sender –Downgrade to be compatible with RFC2821/2822 SMTP Envelope needs to be downgraded to ASCII –Sender specifies both IMA and ASCII address (ALT- ADDRESS) –Automatic conversion to ASCII Compatible Encoding from IMA(may require another SMTP parameter) Headers need Conversion of UTF-8 data to ASCII –How to encode depends on each header
