Accessing the Syllabus

Syllabus and Rubric Class Information and Seminar Times Grading Policies Rubrics for Discussion Boards and Assignments For my section, I post and send out a rubric for each unit so that you have guidelines and familiar with the expectations on how you will be evaluated on your work.  Email and Doc Sharing

Unit 1 Objectives Identify the components of scientific inquiry Demonstrate how to use scientific questioning as part of an investigation Create testable hypotheses to answer scientific questions Course Outcomes practiced in this unit  SC300-1: Explain basic scientific principles and their limitations  SC300-4: Employ appropriate scientific ideas and methods to everyday situations

Tips for Succeeding in SC300  Break-up the Chapter Readings each day by section.  Spend time each day completing the Mini-project or Seminar Option 2. › Cover Page & APA Reference Page › Organized into indented, double-spaced paragraphs  (Introduction, Topic Paragraphs, Conclusion) › Spell and Grammar Check  Participate in Discussion Frequently (3-4 x/week, 2+ posts per thread)  Submit Assignments on Time! (by Tuesday night at 11:59 pm ET)  If stuck or have questions, do not hesitate to contact your instructor, especially about grading.

Unit 1 Assignments  Read Chapter 1  Introduce Yourself  Discussion Posting › What’s in a can?  Seminar › The Scientific Method › Final Project (Due at the end of Unit 9) › Part I: Light Bulb Scenario, Design Your Own Problem › Part II: Application of Science to Your Life

Seminar Discussion You’re getting ready to log in to your favorite KU Course (SC300 – Big Ideas in Science!) and your computer won’t turn on. Now what?!

The Scientific Method Ask Questions Conduct Background Research Construct Hypothesis Test With An Experiment Analyze Results and Draw Conclusion  Accept Hypothesis?  Reject Hypothesis? Report Results and Formulate a Conclusion The Scientific Method (2007). Free Science Fair Project Ideas, Answers, & Tools For Serious Students. Science Buddies. Retrieved on July 10, 2010 from http://kucourses.com/ec/courses/24747/CRS-SC300-3933127/scientific-method-handout.pdf

Step 1: Ask Questions

Step 2: Conduct Background Research What types of research would you conduct in the spur of the moment to determine what is wrong with the computer?

Step 3: Construct Hypothesis Based on your background research, what is your guess as to why your computer is not working?

Step 4: Test With an Experiment What are some steps you would take to confirm that your hypothesis is correct?

Step 5: Analyze Results, Draw Conclusion If your hypothesis is correct based on your results from experimentation, then your conclusion is….

Step 6: Incorrect Hypothesis? If your hypothesis was not correct, what would be your replacement hypothesis?

Step 7: Report Results Develop a theory based on your scientific method steps regarding why the computer was not working properly.

Unit 2 Preview  Reading: Chapter 12 and 14  Video: “Very Small and Far Away” “Mystery of Dark Matter”  Web Reading: History of the Microscope  Discussion (2 parts)  Measuring Feelings and Standards of Measurement  Seminar: Black holes  Project: Student Absences  http://science.education.nih.gov/Supplements/NIH6/inquiry/Activities/activity 2/email_a2.htm http://science.education.nih.gov/Supplements/NIH6/inquiry/Activities/activity 2/email_a2.htm
