The Charpy impact test, also known as the Charpy V- notch test, is a standardized high strain-rate test which determines the amount of energy absorbed by a material during fracture. This absorbed energy is a measure of a given material's notch toughness. It is widely applied in industry, since it is easy to prepare and conduct and results can be obtained quickly and cheaply. Today it is utilized in many industries for testing materials, for example the construction of pressure vessels and bridges to determine how storms will affect the materials used. Charpy impact test
4
Overview – Testing Materials` Charpy Impact Test Measures a materials toughness The Specimen is held horizontally – between two supports The notch on the specimen faces away from the pendulum The striking energy of the pendulum is 300 Joules Pendulum Support Specimen
5
Basic principle Notch impact energy (KV)
6
Sample sizes According to ASTM A370, the standard specimen size for Charpy impact testing is 10 mm × 10mm × 55mm.ASTM
7
Results The quantitative result of the impact tests is the energy needed to fracture a material and can be used to measure the toughness of the material.quantitative The qualitative results of the impact test can be used to determine the ductility of a material. If the material breaks on a flat plane, the fracture was brittle, and if the material breaks with jagged edges or shear lips, then the fracture was ductile.qualitative

IZOD Impact Test
10
Izod Impact Test Measures toughness/Resistance of a material. Test Specimen Held Vertically Vice Pendulum Start Position of Pendulum Scale to read energy absorbed in breaking the specimen The test is similar to the Charpy impact test but uses a different arrangement of the specimen under test. The Izod impact test differs from the Charpy impact test in that the sample is held in a cantilevered beam configuration
11
Overview – Testing Materials` Izod Impact Test Measures a materials toughness The Specimen is held vertically in a vice The notch on the specimen faces the pendulum The striking energy of the pendulum is 167 Joules Pendulum Vice Specimen The dimensions of a standard specimen for ASTM D256 are 63.5 × 12.7 × 3.2 mm
