Modeling Solid-Electrolyte- Electrode Interfaces N. D. Lepley and N. A. W. Holzwarth Wake Forest University Supported by NSF grant DMR-1105485
2
Motivation Solid electrolyte/electrode interfaces more chemically stable Enable Li anodes, S cathodes Interested in characterizing interface – What interface structures are likely? – How does variation influence properties?

4
Interface Lattice Mismatch 3 different classifications of interfaces depending on lattice alignment – Coherent – Semi-coherent – Incoherent Our simulations only consider coherent interfaces

Materials Considered Li 2 O/Li Li 2 S/Li Li 3 PO 4 /Li Li 3 PS 4 /Li Li 3 PS 4 /Li 2 S Oxygen Sulfur Lithium Phosphorous
8
Li 2 O/Li Good test system Stable against Li at equilibrium Multiple Li and interface geometries considered Oxygen Lithium
9
Li 2 S/Li Relevant for Li 3 PS 4 and glassy electrolytes Stable against Li at equilibrium Sulfur Lithium
10
Li 3 PO 4 /Li Similar to LiPON electrolyte Unstable against Li at equilibrium Interface is observed to be stable Oxygen Lithium Phosphorous

Li 3 PO 4 /Li cont’d Unstable against Li at equilibrium: Investigated Li 3 PO 4 decomposition 1.2 eV Decomposed state Li 3 PO 4 /Li interface

Li 3 PS 4 /Li Focus of several recent experimental works Unstable against Li at equilibrium Reactions occur at interface Sulfur Lithium Phosphorous
13
Li 3 PS 4 /Li 2 S We also looked at the stability of the Li 3 PS 4 /Li 2 S interface Sulfur Lithium Phosphorous

Conclusions Developed a new method for removing strain effects from the energetics of model interfaces Investigated several electrolyte materials – Li 3 PO 4 /Li interface is (meta)stable – Li 3 PS 4 /Li interface appears to be passivated by Li 2 S-like layer Negative interface energy associated with reactivity at the interface
