2 David Schultz DCS@SLAC.Stanford.edu 2 Outline The (new) SLAC Accelerator Directorate SLAC Accelerator Safety Self-Assessment Recent ASO Self-Assessment The Four Operational SLAC Accelerators: Linac Accelerator Facility (incl. LCLS) SPEAR3 NLCTA ASTA (Accelerator Structure Test Area)

3 David Schultz DCS@SLAC.Stanford.edu 3 New SLAC Organization Research Directorates User operations, Future capabilities Accelerator Directorate Common standards and practices for SLAC accelerators Specifies performance expectations for user programs Meets specified performance expectations

4 David Schultz DCS@SLAC.Stanford.edu 4 The Accelerator Directorate Contains the operations and maintenance for all four SLAC accelerators. The Accelerator Operations and Safety Division is responsible for safe operations inside the ASEs. The Configuration Control Department (in the Accelerator Engineering Division) is responsible for Document Control. One organization providing uniform standards and processes for accelerators across the Laboratory. The Accelerator Directorate

5 David Schultz DCS@SLAC.Stanford.edu 5 Periodic Self-Assessment Safety Overview Committee (An ES&H Committee) One of the committee Core Roles is to: “ Assign accelerator safety audits for each accelerator facility … Each SLAC accelerator facility will be audited at least once every five years. Audit reports will be provided to the ES&HCC... Audits include Assessment of the facility’s safety systems Assessment of compliance with SLAC ES&H policies and procedures Evaluation of ES&H training programs and records Evaluation of conduct of operations” Accelerator Safety Self-Assessment From the SLAC ES&H Manual, Chapter 31: Institutional ES&H Committees

6 David Schultz DCS@SLAC.Stanford.edu 6 Periodic Self-Assessments Safety Overview Committee Periodic Self-Assessments NLCTA – June 2006 SPEAR3 – August 2007 ASTA – August 2008 LCLS – Recent ARRs 3/07, 12/08 and 8/09 Linac reviewed 4/2005

7 David Schultz DCS@SLAC.Stanford.edu 7 After the December meeting we anticipated having the Accelerator Safety Order Implementation Assessment. Following the Lines of Inquiry, we collected documentation for posting. When the review was cancelled we decided to proceed with a self-assessment in anticipation of a similar review sometime in the future. Current ASO Self-Assessment

8 David Schultz DCS@SLAC.Stanford.edu 8 ASO Self-Assessment Documents

9 David Schultz DCS@SLAC.Stanford.edu 9 Status: The Committee has posted and collated all documents. Individuals are assigned to write a draft assessment for a category of ASO implementation across all SLAC accelerators. (e.g. I am writing an assessment of all SADs.) Identify differences, deficiencies, and best practices. The assessments will be reviewed by the committee and a report released. Current ASO Self-Assessment Status

10 David Schultz DCS@SLAC.Stanford.edu 10 Summary SLAC Accelerator Safety Self-Assessment A process exists to periodically audit the facility’s safety systems compliance with SLAC ES&H policies and procedures training programs and records conduct of operations A Self-Assessment of SLAC Accelerators’ compliance with the ASO is underway. The new SLAC Accelerator Directorate will bring uniform standards and practices for all SLAC accelerators.
