FEZ definition Free economic zones or free zones or special economic zones (SEZ) refer to designated areas in which companies are taxed very lightly or not at all in order to encourage economic activity.

Sometimes they are called free ports, which have historically been endowed with favorable customs regulations, e.g., the free port ofTrieste. Very often free ports constitute a part of free economic zones.

FEZ in Tajikistan KHUDZHAND – Tajikistan’s Free Economic Zones (FEZs) are making progress, but they still need help. President Emomali Rakhmon signed the law creating FEZs in 2004, and the country has opened four – two in 2008 in Sughd and Panj, and two in 2009 in Dangara and Ishkashim.

Sughd Free Economic Zone
The Sughd Free Economic Zone or FEZ "Sughd" is a free economic zone located in Sughd Province on the territory of the south-west industrial zone of the city of Khujand, in the most economically developed region of Tajikistan. Sughd FEZ was created in 2008 by a parliamentary decree on 320 hectares of land for 25 years and began operating in August 2009.

In 2010, the Administration of the Sughd FEZ registered first five corporate residents of the free economic zone.The zone offers customs and tax incentives to qualified investors that invest at least 500,000 USD and import at least 90% of the technology and equipment.

Panj FEZ Panj Free Economic Zone is a free economic zone in Khatlon Province in Tajikistan. The Panj FEZ has made some progress. Faizullo Rasulov, the Panj FEZ administrative director, said four entities have registered this year and are planning to invest US $9m. “These entities are also involved in building infrastructure since we have to start from scratch,” he added.

One of the category of FEZ -SEZ
A Special Economic zone (SEZ) is a geographical region that is designed to export goods and provide employment. SEZs are exempt from federal laws regarding taxes, quotas, FDI-bans, labour laws and other restrictive laws in order to make the goods manufactured in the SEZ at a globally competitive price. The category SEZ includes free trade zones (FTZ), export processing Zones (EPZ), free Zones (FZ), industrial parks or industrial estates (IE), free ports, free economic zones, and urban enterprise zones.
