Existed before the transatlantic slave trade Made up 10 percent of Lisbon’s population Portugal had the first slave markets Trade moved from Portugal to Tropical Colonies Enslaved natives of South America 1501- First slaves arrive in Hispaniola

Before the 1790’s, cotton crops weren’t popular 1793- Cotton gin invented by Eli Whitney Increased cotton production = increased slave demand 1808- Congress banned salve imports from Africa

Brutal, inhumane, and cruel Whippings and executions were very common Sold like property Overly scrutinized for every flaw Harshest treatment was in Louisiana Slaves lived in fear of their owners Massive revolts in Louisiana and the Frontier
