3.  Before the 1790’s, cotton crops weren’t popular  1793- Cotton gin invented by Eli Whitney  Increased cotton production = increased slave demand  1808- Congress banned salve imports from Africa

4.  Brutal, inhumane, and cruel  Whippings and executions were very common  Sold like property  Overly scrutinized for every flaw  Harshest treatment was in Louisiana  Slaves lived in fear of their owners  Massive revolts in Louisiana and the Frontier
