What are Fundamental British values?
Democracy The rule of law Individual liberty Mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs

British value: Democracy:
We listen to all views We debate and discuss arguments for and against We choose to get involved We express our views peacefully We choose to vote and respect the result of the majority

British value: Rule of Law:
We know the difference between right and wrong choices We make sure our rules and expectations are clear We know rules keep us safe We respect and follow the rules We understand there are consequences when rules are broken

British value: Individual liberty:
We are responsible for our own behaviour We question stereotypes and bias We are an anti-bullying school We promote self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence We challenge people using unkind words and actions

British value: Respect and tolerance:
We promote respect We have respect for our own and others’ cultures We discuss differences of faith, ethnicity, disability, gender and families We develop confidence and self awareness We show care and consideration

British values as part of moral development in a spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development policy Ways in which the school supports pupils' moral development include: Involving pupils in the annual review of the school codes of behaviour Helping pupils to make decisions that are acceptable to the school community and society at large Encouraging healthy self-esteem Helping pupils to value physical well-being, privacy, feelings, beliefs and the rights of others Encouraging pupils to explore their feelings in reactions to different stimuli

British values-related teaching objectives
To respect the opinions and beliefs of others: we can identify artifacts worn by Jews / Muslims during worship and explain why these are important to them To cherish the individual liberty afforded to citizens of these islands: we can recognise the restrictions imposed by political system such as apartheid To have some understanding of how a democratic political system works: we can compare the nature of Athenian democracy with a modern democratic system To be conversant with examples of British creativity and/or culture: we can describe how scientists like Isaac Newton developed the theory of gravity

Tackling extremism in school
Be able to deal with a young person saying something unpalatable, incendiary or offensive Respect young people's preconceptions. These may reflect extremist or otherwise offensive thinking, but rather than ignoring them, adults should allow the views to be aired and dealt with Have sufficient knowledge to be able to counter stereotypes or mistaken assumptions about a particular religion, or where this is not feasible, know how to access the necessary information
