Mental Health & Wellbeing Day… Where did the name come from?! ‘Piece of Mind...’

Aims of the Day… To increase understanding about mental health amongst young people To launch the ‘Keep Calm & Read On…’ mental health resource and to raise awareness about mental health services available to young people in Manchester To be a ‘trigger’ for supporting the Mental Health & Wellbeing agenda in schools and across Greater Manchester

Who is here today? Pupils from 13 secondary schools across Manchester Manchester Youth Councillors Staff from Manchester Healthy Schools and Manchester Youth Council Mental Health Services: CAMHS, 42 nd Street, YASP

What’s going to happen? Introduction to Mental Health Workshops Interactive activities: ‘Emotions’ Wall, Positive Places Map, ‘Words of Wisdom’ Next Steps…

What’s happening this evening? From 4:30-7:30pm there will be an informal ‘drop-in’ session here led by Manchester Youth Council. Other mental health services will be coming along to share information about what they do. There will be interactive activities for young people to get involved in. Feel free to come along to this session if you wish – and bring your friends!

Mental Health Spectrum Mental health is: “a state of well-being in which the individual realises his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community” (WHO, 2000) mentally healthy mental health problems mental illness

UK Mental Health Statistics –Number of adults with common mental health problems = 1 in 4 (UK) –Number of children with common mental health problems = 1 in 10 (UK)

Mental Health & Wellbeing It is important to recognise our feelings and to know how we can support our own mental wellbeing particularly when we are feeling stressed, anxious or down.

This is only the beginning… We’d like you to discuss in your school groups (or join up with another school) some of the things that you can do back in your own schools to support the mental health and wellbeing agenda…

Here are some ideas to get you started… 1)Set up a ‘Wellbeing’ task group in your school. 2)Plan & deliver assemblies about mental health using some of the ideas/messages you’ve seen here today – or research your own! 3)Set up a link to the ‘Keep Calm & Read On’ resource on your school website.

Here are some ideas to get you started… 4)Use your school plasma screens to promote positive messages and pictures across the school and to highlight the ‘Keep Calm’ resource. 5)Host a ‘Wellbeing’ day. 6)Engage with mental health services and find out what support/information they could offer.

Followed on from the first ever United Nations conference on Happiness and Wellbeing conference on Happiness and Wellbeing An earlier UN resolution calling for member states to place a greater focus on the happiness of their citizens every year on 20 March. UN resolution Global campaign to celebrate and declare a day of happiness. The idea originated from Bhutan – a country whose citizens are considered some of the happiest people in the world.Bhutan To celebrate people all over the world are taking part and reclaiming happiness. Often surrounded by material things Does this make us happy? Research shows it doesn't! In fact we are no happy than people were 50 years ago! So what is it all about?

Doing something good for others. Doing good feels good Something small Being good to people around you makes everyone feel better. Best thing is happiness is contagious So what actually makes us happy?
