Lamar as President Mirabeau Lamar easily won the presidency after Sam Houston’s term ended. (NO consecutive terms) Lamar’s goals differed from Houston’s in several ways: he was against annexation, he believed force should be used against the Native Americans, and he made it a priority to gain recognition of the republic by Mexico.

Lamar as President During Lamar’s presidency, the capital was moved to Austin, a new city on the frontier. One of Lamar’s policies was to improve education, and Congress responded by setting aside land for public schools. “Father of Education”

Lamar as President Lamar distrusted the Native Americans and believed that many of them were allied with Mexico. Lamar launched a military campaign against the Cherokee resulting in the Native American group fleeing Texas. The Council House Fight was meant to be a peaceful meeting to negotiate with the Comanche, but it led to several battles and many deaths, and eventually the Comanche also fled Texas.

Lamar as President Although Congress rejected Lamar’s plan to annex Santa Fe from the Mexican territory, he tried to do it anyway and failed.
