Ch 11 section 1 Egypt is LARGE. About the same size as Texas and New Mexico combined. Most of Egypt is desert. The people live on less than 4 % of the land which is about the size of Maryland.

The Nile supplies 85% of the country’s water. The Nile empties into the Mediterranean Sea.

Sinai Peninsula Crossroad between Africa and Southwest Asia The Suez Canal separates this peninsula and the rest of Egypt. It is one of the worlds most important canals because it allows ships to bypass Africa when making journeys.

Desert Areas The eastern desert is known as the Arabian Desert. West of the Nile is known as Libyan Desert. Both deserts are part of the Sahara. “desert”Sahara is Arabic for “desert” The Sahara is the size of the U.S.

Climatedesert= HOT Little rain- Cairo the capital receives about.4 inches a year! Springtime doesn’t bring rain- it brings HOT winds that can move 87 miles per hour!

Economy $$$ Fertile lands are few and far between- only 29% of people farm. Crops include- sugarcane, grains, veggies, fruits and of course COTTON! Industry includes hydroelectric power, petroleum from the Red sea and phosphates that come from sea (salt for fertilizer)

That’s right! Oil discovery! In 1959 Libya discovered they had OIL! The govt. uses the money to build schools, hospitals, have a strong military and import food. Libya has around 5.5 mil. People- most (if not all) are of mixed heritage. Arab and Berber. Berbers were the 1 st known to live in N. Africa.
