3 Session Outcomes 1.Review Financial Literacy Standards. 2.Draw connections between Financial Literacy Standards and other Maryland State Standards. 3.Explore resources that support integrated instruction. 4.Reflect on how to implement resources in your school and/or school system. 5.Create a plan to share session information with faculty at your school and/or school system.

5 Why Financial Literacy? To equip students with the skills and knowledge to make informed, financially responsible decisions

6 Financial Literacy Defined The ability to use knowledge and skills to manage financial resources effectively for a lifetime of financial well-being (2008 Annual Report to the President). Financial Literacy = Application Financial Education = Process

7 History of Financial Literacy Education in Maryland Task Force established to study how to improve financial literacy in Maryland January 2008 Advisory Council established to build a program of study and a design team to develop a state curriculum June 2009 The State Board of Education accepted the State Curriculum for Personal Financial Literacy January 2010 The State Board of Education adopted regulations requiring financial literacy education for all students at the elementary, middle, and high school levels June 2010

8 Six Standards in the State Curriculum 1.Make Informed, Financially Responsible Decisions 2.Relate Careers, Education and Income 3.Plan and Manage Money 4.Manage Credit and Debt 5.Create and Build Wealth 6.Manage Risks and Preserve Wealth Organized by Gradebands: 3-5, 6-8, 9-12

Be prepared to discuss the following: – How does your assigned standard foster financial literacy in students? – What are some example learning experiences that students can participate in to meet the standard? – How does the standard connect to standards in other disciplines?
