2 Day 1: Word Sorts Teacher Introduces New Sort Cut your words and put them away If you finish early, begin sorting your words

3 Day 2: Sort; Self-Check; Partner Check  Sort your words  Self-Check  Touch and say each word in a column Does it sound right? Does it look right?  Partner Check  Use the same procedure as above  Coach or Quiet Celebration  If you finish…Do it again!

4 Day 3: Sort; Self-Check; Partner Check; Write the Sort  Sort your words  Self-Check  Touch and say each word in a column Does it sound right? Does it look right?  Partner Check  Use the same procedure as above  Coach or Quiet Celebration  Write your words under the correct heading  If time…Mix and repeat the sort

5 Day 4: Blind Sort  Partner up (Shoulder or Face Partners)  Use one set of cards, mix them up and arrange them face down in a pile  Partner A will read the word aloud to partner B, partner B will point to which heading the word will fall under  Partner A reads the word again and checks to see if it is in the correct column  Coach or quiet praise, Mix the cards and repeat

6 Day 5: Sort Check  Assessment Day  Sort your words  Self-Check  Touch and say each word in a column Does it sound right? Does it look right?  Glue your sort into your journal

7 Blind Writing Sort  Partner up (Shoulder or Face Partners)  Use one set of cards, mix them up and arrange them face down in a pile  In your journal, write the headings on the top of your paper  Partner A will read a word aloud to partner B, partner B will write the word under the correct heading  Partner A shows the word and checks to see if it is spelled correctly and in the correct column; If it is incorrect, partner B erases and spells the word again under the correct column.  Coach or quiet praise, switch roles

8 Word Hunt  Look for new words that fit into your sorting categories from books or stories you are reading.  Write your headings at the top of your journal page; then write words that have the same spelling feature as your current sort.  CVC *CVVC*CVCe  pack--plain --bake  slack--train --same
