Spelling Spreadsheet Send questions to Tammy Moore armoorefam@centurytel.net

Getting Started Place the CD-ROM into your D Drive. Open the “Most Current Excel” file. You will want the ability to make changes to the spelling spreadsheet, so make a copy of it to your hard-drive. I save a copy for each of my kids to use. I title it with their name and ‘Spelling’ (Greg Spelling).

What You Will See You will see headers along the top of the spreadsheet. In the next few slides, you will be introduced to what each column is used for.

Headers in the Spreadsheet – Word # Word # (column A) is the column with the links to the sound files. Click on an underlined word in this column and you will hear the word for that row.

Headers in the Spreadsheet – Grade Grade (column B) is the column that I use to keep track of the spelling word curricular source that it comes from. It is also used to help order the numbers during sorting. If you want to change the order that a word appears when you sort, this is what you would be changing.

Headers in the Spreadsheet – Word Word (Column C) is where your student can see the words. This column can be adjusted to be visible for the purpose of study or be made invisible for quiz mode.

Headers in the Spreadsheet – Answer Answer (Column D) is where your student will type in his spelling attempt.

Headers in the Spreadsheet – 0 0 (Column E) is where your student will get immediate feedback as to whether he spelled the word correctly or not. If incorrect, the 0 will stay a 0. If correct, when the student clicks on the next row, the 0 will turn to a 1.

Headers in the Spreadsheet – Successful Pass Countdown Successful Pass Countdown (Column F) is where you can have your student track how many attempts it takes to learn a word. For every unsuccessful attempt, the student records a higher number. If there have already been 2 unsuccessful attempts and there is another misspelling for that word, then he will change the 2 to a 3. The higher the number, the more that word will need to be reviewed later.

Headers in the Spreadsheet – Focus Focus (Column G) is where I record what the lesson focus for that word was. It might be a spelling rule, prefix, suffix, heart word, etc. You can leave it visible or make it invisible to the student.

Headers in the Spreadsheet – Teacher’s Comments Teacher’s Comments (Column H) is just an additional column where I note what seemed to be the problem for the student. This helps with planning instructional/remediation efforts.

Quiz Mode – How to Hide the Text During Quiz mode, you will want the word column and perhaps the Focus column hidden. There are several ways to hide information in a column. Here is one way. First select the section that you want hidden by pressing the left mouse button and moving the cursor to the end of the section you want to hide then release the button.

Quiz Mode - How to Hide the Text Once the section you want hidden is selected, now right click and open the Format Cell then Font option. Open the drop down menu for color and select white. Click OK. Now all the text in the selection box will be white.

Quiz Mode – Taking the Quiz The student will click on the hyperlinked word# (column A) to hear the word spoken. They will then try to spell the word - in column D. If they get it correct, the 0 in column E will turn to a 1 as soon as they move the cursor down to the next word field.

Quiz Mode – Taking the Quiz Once the quiz is finished, change the words back to black. By looking in the ‘0’ column, the student can quickly see all the missed words. There will be a 0 for each row missed. The student may note the missed words in the unsuccessful pass column by increasing the number there by 1. The student will write down all the words that were missed for study away from the computer. Moms, note the lesson focus column for instruction/remediation.
