Before French and Indian War 13 colonies left alone (Salutary Neglect) ◦ They paid little to no taxes ◦ And they smuggled to avoid British taxes After French and Indian War Britain in debt, taxed 13 Colonies Colonists resented this change ◦ Unfair ◦ No colonial representatives in Parliament ◦ “No Taxation without Representation”

Colonists felt they were English citizens As citizens they should be represented in English Parliament which makes the laws for the English Empire Since the colonists did not have representatives in Parliament. Parliament did not have the authority to pass laws taxing them The colonists DID NOT want to be represented in Parliament because they would be outnumbered by the Parliamentary representatives from England It was a slogan that was easily remembered by everyone that meant. Hey! Our rights are being violated and that’s not right.
