Large scale curriculum redesign Continuing the conversation Technology-Supported Processes for Agile and Responsive Curricula (T-SPARC) Professor Paul Bartholomew Centre for Enhancement of Learning and Teaching Birmingham City University Project Manager Head of Curriculum Design and Academic Staff Development

Background 2008 – 2012 project 2008-2009 – spent in review We concentrated on the ‘lived experience’ of curriculum design.

Findings of our Review Programme teams reported that this focus on the products of curriculum design rather than the process of curriculum design detracts from rich team discourse and innovative solutions to curriculum design challenges. In summary, our approval practices were perceived to tend to stifle innovation and required a documentary overhead that is seen by staff as being disproportionate to its value.

Across the JISC Projects Effective Curriculum Design Effective discourse Effective, shareable representations of programme designs Effective (and bolstered) stakeholder engagement Effective structures: Policies Systems

Across the JISC Projects – new ‘things’ Solutions across the projects Board games Guidance documents Flash cards Bespoke software

It works!

It’s scalable Our University Senate has given approval for the new processes (subject to successful pilots) Software architecture has been designed from the ground-up for University-wide scalability Need to articulate with SRS has been considered and is development is convergent We have developed parallel mechanisms for supporting staff in relation to their pedagogic/design needs
