Suez Canal connects Mediterranean and the Red Sea. Important to Middle East for transportation of OIL.

Trouble in the Suez Egypt strengthened ties to USSR so US and GB rescinded their offer to help with construction of Aswan Dam on Nile River The leader of Egypt, Gamal Nasser, blocked the Suez canal to try to control trade Israel (with US and GB help), invaded Egypt and overtook the canal. United Nations ordered the withdrawal of all troops and Egypt reopened canal in 1957.

U-2 -American high altitude reconnaissance aircraft or spy plane

U-2 Incident U2 shot down in Soviet territory US denied they were sending spy planes. The pilot, Francis Gary Powers, survived the crash. Eisenhower suspended all U-2 flights, but Soviet Premier was not satisfied. Powers was exchanged in 1962 for a Soviet spy.

Sputnik

Sputnik or Спутник-1 On October 4, 1957, USSR put the first artificial satellite, Sputnik I, into an orbit of the Earth 23 inches in diameter and weighed 183 pounds. It circled the globe every 96 min. @18,000 mph for 92 days until it re-entered in the atmosphere and burned up. Source of tension during the cold war
