Pre-Depression ● has always been country dependent on trade o wheat o lumber products o newsprint ● relatively good economy

Trade Collapse ● Smoot-Hawley Tarriff Act ● Export prices plummeted price of lumber fell 32% from 1929 to 1932 and cattle prices declined 60% ● Unemployment reached average of 32% in Canadian cities

Demise of Canadian Prairies ● Suffered not only from trade wars but from drought, deprivation, and plagues of grasshoppers ● 1 in 12 people had left region for good ● Much of province of Saskatchewan reduced to wasteland ravaged by natural disasters

No Government Intervention ● Main difference between Canada and North America’s reaction to depression ● Short-lived attempt from prime minister R.B. Bennett to copy Roosevelt’s New Deal ● Struck down by Privy Council in London, which was Canada’s ultimate Supreme Court
