Today’s Objectives SWBAT discuss why there is no “away.” SWBAT describe three types of waste. SWBAT discuss the impacts of human consumption.

Trash Talk Make a list of everything you can remember throwing away in the last 48 hours After about 3 minutes, you will each write one thing from your list on the board

Trash Talk and the LCM Remember the LCM? Matter cannot be created or destroyed, just converted from one form of matter to another. Consider the following statement: There is no such thing as “waste.” It is impossible to “throw away” anything.

Trash Talk Questions How much of this stuff is necessary? What are some alternatives to throwing away the “trash” we listed on the board? Why is it important to think about what we use, what we throw away, and how to come up with alternatives?

Types of Waste – Expert Groups One person from each group will go to one expert station You have 5 minutes to read over your type of waste You will then have 5 minutes to share your knowledge with your home group

“Story of Stuff” Video What do you expect from a video that you watch in a science or history class? Who might narrate it? What images might you see? What might its general purpose be?

“Story of Stuff” Video The video you are about to see will help you learn about the effects of human consumption It was created by a woman named Annie Leonard You will answer questions before, during, and after the video Question review (so you’ll know what to expect!)

Exit Question 1. Describe one type of waste: municipal waste, hazardous waste, or e-waste. 2. Describe the thing you learned from the video that is most important to you. HW: Write your own “Story of Stuff.”
