5. Today’s Objectives  SWBAT discuss why there is no “away.”  SWBAT describe three types of waste.  SWBAT discuss the impacts of human consumption.

6. Trash Talk  Make a list of everything you can remember throwing away in the last 48 hours  After about 3 minutes, you will each write one thing from your list on the board

7. Trash Talk and the LCM  Remember the LCM? Matter cannot be created or destroyed, just converted from one form of matter to another.  Consider the following statement: There is no such thing as “waste.” It is impossible to “throw away” anything.

8. Trash Talk Questions  How much of this stuff is necessary?  What are some alternatives to throwing away the “trash” we listed on the board?  Why is it important to think about what we use, what we throw away, and how to come up with alternatives?

9. Types of Waste – Expert Groups  One person from each group will go to one expert station  You have 5 minutes to read over your type of waste  You will then have 5 minutes to share your knowledge with your home group

10. “Story of Stuff” Video  What do you expect from a video that you watch in a science or history class?  Who might narrate it?  What images might you see?  What might its general purpose be?

11. “Story of Stuff” Video  The video you are about to see will help you learn about the effects of human consumption  It was created by a woman named Annie Leonard  You will answer questions before, during, and after the video  Question review (so you’ll know what to expect!)
