Properties of Magnets: Magnets have magnetic fields, which exert forces on other magnetic materials Magnets have a north pole and a south pole
3
Magnetic field lines travel from the magnet’s north pole to the south pole Magnetic fields are strongest at the magnet’s poles
4
Electrons have magnetic properties. In some materials, the electrons exert magnetic forces on nearby electrons, and groups of particles align their magnetic fields. These groups are called domains.
5
If another magnetic field exerts a force on the domains, the domains will line up, creating a magnet. This is how a paperclip can become temporarily magnetized when placed in a magnetic field
6
An electric current traveling through a wire produces a magnetic field around the wire An electric current traveling through a coil of wire produces a magnetic field inside the coil. This creates an electromagnet
