According to Oxford dictionary, the literal meaning of stress is: “Pressure or tension exerted on a material object”

“Selye (1956) defined stress as any non- specific response of the body to any demand made upon it. Typically, stress results when an individual's equilibrium is upset - when our behavior modes are not adequate to meet the demands of situations and when the failure to adapt has serious consequences.”
