Population
2
Canadian Facts In Canada –Births: 1070 / day –Deaths: 575 / day –Immigration: 610 / day –Emigration: 135 / day –At the end of the day: 970 more people every day in Canada.

Demography = the study of human populations
4
Use rates not numbers Country Number of Births per Year Population Birth Rate Canada 390 000 30 000 000 13 Russia 1 329 000 147 700 000 9 Togo 221 000 4 700 000 47 Birth Rate = (Births / Population) x 1000
5
Rates that determine Changes 1. Natural Increase Rate (NIR) = Combination of Birth rate and Death rate. Canada’s NIR = Birth rate – death rate Canada’s NIR = 13 – 7 = 6 = 6 To convert to a percentage 6/1000 = 0.006 To convert to a percentage 6/1000 = 0.006 = 0.006 x 100 = 0.006 x 100 = 0.6 % = 0.6 % Therefore, Canada’s natural increase rate is 0.6%

Rates that determine Changes 2. Net migration rate (NMR) = immigration rate – emigration rate Canada’s NIR = immigration rate – emigration rate = 7 – 2 = 5 / 1000 = 0.005 x 100 = 0.5 %

3. Population growth rate Population growth rate (PGR) = natural increase rate + net migration rate Canada’s PGR = 6 + 5 = 11 / 1000 = 11 / 1000 =0.011 x 100 =0.011 x 100 = 1.1 % = 1.1 %

Conclusion The rate at which a country is growing or declining has an enormous influence on people’s lives: –Growing rapidly: housing, education, healthcare, and jobs. –Declining rapidly: workers and customers.

Assignment Write a 1.5 page opinion paper on how you feel the 1 child policy is beneficial to or infringes on human rights. Your paper must include: –An introduction (3-5 sentences) –A body with at least 3 supporting facts (3 paragraphs with at least 3-5 sentences each) –A Conclusion (3-5 sentences)
