Here is some of the meat they ate in their meals: The rich would even eat a swan for just one course. On Fridays in lent you weren't allowed to eat meat you had to eat fish or whatever else you could find.

Bread Bread was used in many courses in Tudor history. Poor and rich Tudors ate bread, the poor’s bread was made out of rye or ground acorns and rich had it made out of fresh flour. Here are some bread types that Tudors had: Manchet A gorgeous white bread made out of wheat flour with a bit of bran and wheat germ added. It was a creamy yellow colour. This bread was for nobility. Raveled bread or Yeoman's bread was made from a coarser whole wheat flour with the bran left in.It was a darker colour and less expensive than the manchet.

Vegetables Rich people did not eat many vegetables because they preferred a high protein diet. Potatoes were not known in early Tudor times. The Spanish found potatoes in Peru and then John Hawkins brought them back from the West Indies in 1563. Yeoman's farmers wives grew vegetables, herbs and flowers for eating in their gardens. The types of vegetables grown included: leeks, garlic, peas, parsnips, skirrets, collards, kale, lentils, turnips, broad beans, onions, spinach, carrots, beets, radishes and asparagus.

Fruit There were a lot of varieties of fruit in Tudor times like pears, cherries apples, damsons, plums, strawberries and gooseberries. Most of the fruits then were cooked because doctors thought it was raw food and could cause illnesses. Apples were mashed in a mortor(which would have same effect today). It wasn't till 18 th century that people started eating proper fruit.

Drink In the 16 th century it was not safe to drink water so for ordinary people they had to drink beer or ale.Young children drank milk and only the very poor drank water. Ale was still the main drink in the 16 th century and gradually came more common.
