2 Objectives Morning Session Understand how word processing can be used to support literacy Become familiar with Microsoft Word 2007 Create a literacy resource using Word 2007 Afternoon Session Create classroom certificates and other classroom resources Understand the basics of file management Create a file management structure for participants’ own laptop Discuss how the above tools can support literacy Discuss how the above tools can support assessment © NCTE 2011

4 Practical Session This session will cover Getting started with MS Word Exploring the interface Creating a simple document Copying & pasting Basic formatting Document views Printing Inserting graphics

5 Activity – Creating Resources 1.Using Word in the Classroom Labels, notices, class rules etc 2. Using Word to Support Literacy create a resource for literacy for your own class level Please refer to page 23 of the course manual for these activities © NCTE 2011

6 Practical Session This session will cover Finding images Making certificates Creating a class newsletter Using images in Word Creating tables © NCTE 2011

7 Activity – Creative Uses for Word Using the tools covered, create a resource for the class level which you teach. It could be any of the following or another resource which you would like to create: Certificate Homework voucher Timetable Table containing childrens’ names Word box containing words from the class reader © NCTE 2011

8 Introduction to File Management Why use File Management? Please refer to page 34 of the NCTE course manual for discussion on file management Suggest how you might organise your files for literacy or numeracy for your particular class level © NCTE 2011

9 Practical Session This session will cover: The Windows desktop My Computer Windows Explorer File Management introduction Common file formats/icons Opening & saving files Creating new folders Organising existing files Using a flash drive/USB Key © NCTE 2011

10 Activity – File Management Design your own filing system Please refer to Page 46 for an example of a filing system Create your own personalised filing system Please refer to pages 47 in the NCTE course manual for further information. © NCTE 2011

11 Activity - Assessment Consider how you would use word processing and file management to assist with assessing pupils in your class. Share your ideas with other participants. Please refer to page 47 of the NCTE course manual for some ideas. © NCTE 2011
