Characteristics of a Global Citizen 1. Curiosity about the World –Open-minded about what there is beyond the world you know –Interest in learning about different people, cultures, ways of thinking, history, geography, wonders. How? –Try new things, learn about a new culture, learn a new language, watch international media, take classes that are non-US focused, become/host an exchange student, become a pen-pal

Characteristics of a Global Citizen 2.Hobbies & Interests with Int’l Elements –Try a hobby or interest that people from other parts of the world or other cultures also practice. –Examples: ethnic cooking, fencing, music, dancing. How? –Study a chosen hobby, take classes, study abroad, travel overseas, eat/dance/craft in international businesses (restaurants, civic groups, etc.)

Characteristics of a Global Citizen 3. Awareness of Global Issues –Have an interest for issues and problems in other parts of the world and take action to be involved in them. How? –Get information from multiple int’l media sources (BBC News, international publications, etc.) –Write about international issues, educate others on them, travel, get involved in an international issue.

Characteristics of a Global Citizen 4. An Int’l Network of Contacts –Have a network of people with international experience and build upon this network throughout their lives. How? –Make and maintain friendships with people from other countries or people who are interested in int’l issues. –Have a variety of friends from different ethnicities, cultures, religions. –Job shadow, intern, study abroad.

Characteristics of a Global Citizen 5.Involvement in & Contribution to Global Causes –Be aware of and donate time, money, other resources to a global cause with the intent to help fix or change a global situation. How? –Find a cause that you can connect with and research how to get involved. –UNICEF, CARE, Operation Smile, Relay for Life, Make a Wish, WWF, environmental issues organizations

Language Proficiency –Know another language so you can travel and work internationally. –You can understand a culture and its people better and give you a competitive advantage. How? –Take language classes or use Rosetta Stone. –Practice with native speakers, read or watch media in other languages.

Characteristics of a Global Citizen 7.Cross-Cultural Appreciation & Adaptation –Develop the ability to adapt to different people and cultures, and accept the differences. How? –Know the language, try the food, examine why there are differences.

Characteristics of a Global Citizen 8. A Global Way of Thinking –Look at problems from other countries’ points of view. How? –Research global issues from other perspectives. –Live in another country. –Get news from international sources.

How? –Internships –Work study programs –Job exchange programs –Work for an int’l company, organization, charity

Sharing Int’l Experience –Become a part of organizations with int’l focus. –Share your pictures, ideas, experiences with family, friends, school. –Educate others about the fallacies of stereotypes. How? –Study abroad -Written or visual expression –Volunteering -Guest speak –Activist work

Global Citizenship Project HOMEWORK: -Teach your parent about the Global Citizen Characteristics. they -Ask them who they think is a Global Citizen. AS THIS PERSON, -You will then do a project AS THIS PERSON, and have the class guess who this person is at then end of your presentation.

Day 2:Global Citizenship Project Right Now… dramatically POSITIVEGet out your list 5 possible “candidates” who have dramatically affected the world in a POSITIVE way. Sign out a laptop from the cart closest to your side of the room. I will call you over one at a time to tell me your global citizen.

Global Citizenship Project You will have all block, and only this block to work on your PowerPoint, but should have come to class with: –The 3 characteristics you have chosen that best reflect the global citizenship of your person. –Some source research. You will submit it to SharePoint by 7AM on 9/17. Presentations will begin the 9/17.

Global Citizenship Project Presentation Day!!! Take a number from the bucket on the front table. Presentations start today. 1-12 will present today. 13-24 will present on Monday. Your project should be on SharePoint, in my email, or on a flash drive (bring it to me NOW!)
