Today What is the User Interface and Usability Why worry about the User Interface The cost of poor user interface Gabriel Spitz 2

What is the User Interface (UI) A user interface is the meeting point between a user and a computer program It is the means and methods by which a user utilizes a specific application to achieve a goal for which the application was designed for and the user wants to achieve Gabriel Spitz 5
6
Good User Interface Good User Interface is an interface that is designed in a way that when using it the user will walk away with a positive User Experience The process of designing an interface that will result in a good experience is called User Centered Design Gabriel Spitz 6
7
What is User Centered Design It is a design philosophy focused on meeting user's needs It is a Structured Process aimed at creating desirable products It is a set of techniques that we use when aiming to develop a useful and usable products Gabriel Spitz 7
8
Usable User Interface Usable User interface is an Interface that meet the 5 E’ s of a delightful product Easy to learn Efficient Effective Engaging Error tolerant Gabriel Spitz 8
9
Making it Usable Gabriel Spitz 9 Designing usable products is based on observing and understanding Human Behavior A UI that is: Engaging Effective And maybe Error Tolerant
10
What is Included in the UI User Interface includes more than the functionality it offers the user. It also includes Conceptual characteristics – What is this like Perceptual/Cognitive characteristics – Color, font size, label, work flow Physical characteristics – Size, resistance, gesture When designing a user interface we need to consider all of the above aspects Gabriel Spitz 10
11
Gabriel Spitz 11 Controls Displays Procedure Guidance - labels UI Example Watch Note the elements of the UI
12
UI Example Gabriel Spitz 12 Telephone Controls Displays Procedure Guidance - labels Note the elements of the UI
13
UI Example Gabriel Spitz 13 Controls Displays Procedure Guidance - labels Note the elements of the UI Car Control
14
UI Example Gabriel Spitz 14 Kiosk Controls Displays Procedure Guidance - labels Note the elements of the UI
15
Imortance of the User Interface Gabriel Spitz 15
16
For Many the UI is the Product For most non-technical folks the UI is the product People use a products because of the functionality it provide People love a product because of the experience that emerges from using it Gabriel Spitz 16
17
It Exposes the Value of the Product Communicate Communicate to the user what can be done Communicate to users how it should be done Enable Enable the user to perform specific tasks Enable the user to acquire specific information Promote Promote a positive experience Promote satisfaction Gabriel Spitz 17
18
It shapes User Opinion The “ quality ” of the interface design directly drives: user attitude and feelings User satisfaction user performance safety Poor user interface can have serious consequences Gabriel Spitz 18
19
Cost of poor User Interface Gabriel Spitz 19
20
Poor UI – Can Ruin an Election Gabriel Spitz 20 Florida Ballots (2000) Users could not figure out How to use – Poor mapping between stimulus & response
21
Poor UI – Can Ruin Dinner Gabriel Spitz 21 Poor Mapping
22
Poor UI – Can Ruin a Product Gabriel Spitz 22 Bob Microsoft 1995 Users do not like Anthropomorphism User satisfaction
23
Poor UI - Can be a Safety hazard Gabriel Spitz 23 Negative transfer of training resulting in many errors Renault 4 circa 1970
24
Poor UI - Can Ruin a Trip Gabriel Spitz 24 Lavatory sink – It is difficult to use Performance Incompatibility between control design and task
25
In Summary Gabriel Spitz 25
26
Why Usable Interface From a user ’ s perspective there is no good user interface in the absolute sense only with respect to its usage An interface is bad or good to the extent that it hinders or supports users in performing a specific task in a specific environment Poor interface = Poor product/application Gabriel Spitz 26
27
What is a Good Interface An Interface that Enable users to achieve their intentions Easy to learn Efficient- Performance speed and errors Effective – Easy to use Error tolerant Engaging Gabriel Spitz 27
