2 Bowdlerize Origin: Bowdlerize derives from the name Thomas Bowdler, an editor in Victorian times who rewrote Shakespeare, removing all profanity and sexual references so as not to offend the sensibilities of the audiences of his day.

3 Thomas Bowdler (11 July 1754 – 24 February 1825) An English physician who published an expurgated edition of William Shakespeare's work,. He published an edited version of Edward Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. His edition was the subject of some criticism and ridicule due to the cuts and deletions that changed the story so much that it was at time unrecognizable. His name is now (Bowdlized) is now associated with censorship of literature, motion pictures and television programs.
