BP Biofuels a growing alternative 1 “Alternative Energy: a reality in your lifetime, not a choice”
2
Your Choices Every choice moves us closer to or farther away from something. Where are your choices taking your life? What do your behaviors demonstrate that you are saying yes or no to in life?- - Eric Allenbaugh With greater freedom and independence, young people face new choices involving all kinds of risk. Poor choices about these risks can have terrible consequences for individuals, families, and society as a whole. Our lives are a continuous series of daily choices, and the consequences of our choices should be intentional. Are you a bystander watching your life events unfold in a random fashion? Or do you recognize and make deliberate choices?

BP’s Alternative Energy Choices Over forty years ago BP made a choice to venture into the alternative energy arena with it’s entrance into the solar market and with this choice BP’s near 40-year commitment to solar energy set the stage for it’s alternative energy businesses which now include wind, carbon capture, and biofuels. This decision was certainly influenced by the corporation's commitment to doing things differently and it’s commitment to the environment. In 2011 we chose to invest $1.6 billion in our alternative energy business, more than any previous year. During 2011, our biofuels business acquired the Brazilian sugar and ethanol producer Companhia Nacional de Açúcar e Álcool (CNAA) and increased our share in the Brazilian biofuels company, Tropical BioEnergia S.A., to 100%. Our wind business progressed three new wind farms in the US. We made several investments in sustainable energy technologies including Chromatin, a supplier of renewable biomass feedstocks for power, fuel and chemical producers.

And Now We Choose You BP is a proud sponsor of this program because we recognize that developing the next generation of researchers and professors in biological science and engineering is an investment in longer and better lives for millions of people around the world.. And we’ve chosen you to make this a reality. Good or Bad; Right or Wrong; Your destiny will unfold according to the choices you make and we want to be a part of your choice driven life.

Understanding Biofuels "Biofuels" are transportation fuels that you can use for automobiles. They are made from biomass materials – which means they are made from living, or previously living, organisms. These fuels are usually blended with the petroleum fuels — gasoline and diesel fuel – but they can also be used on their own. The two main types are ethanol and biodiesel. Ethanol is a clear, colorless alcohol fuel made from the sugars found in grains, such as corn, sorghum, and barley, as well as potato skins, rice, sugar cane, sugar beets, and yard clippings. Ethanol is a renewable fuel because it is made from plants. Ethanol can also be produced by breaking down cellulose in woody fibers. Cellulosic ethanol is considered an “advanced” biofuel and involves a more complicated production process than conventional ethanol made from starches or sugars. However, with this process we can make ethanol from trees, grasses, and crop wastes, reducing concerns that increasing ethanol production will reduce food supply..

Empowering You to Make Good Choices Your young life will include lots of choices. These choices may lead to good things later in life or bad things. Some of your choices in your young age will effect you for the rest of your life. Realize that your life will come with many critical decisions (what type of career, how much education, when to buy a house, etc.) and that these choices will come with consequences. Today I want to empower each of you to make good choices. The consequences of a choice or decision you take 30 seconds to make, could determine the rest of your life and, more importantly, it could determine someone else's life. Remember theaftermath of that decision doesn't go away at the end of the day, or the end of the year. I encourage you all to give every decision one extra second of thought before you take action. That extra second of thought may save you from a lifetime of regrets.
22
Take Charge of Your Life Make smarter decisions. Define your values and what matters most to you. Recognize and prioritize your goals. Develop a personal plan of how to implement positive habits in your lives. Find a healthy balance between school, work, friends, and everything else. Remember either you will control your future or your future will control you.
