KANSAS BEGINS TO BLEED

ACTS OF VIOLENCE Throughout the territorial period of Kansas at least 50 people lost their lives in the fight over slavery This is BEFORE the war even starts Many more were injured or their property was destroyed

LAWRENCE Residents of Lawrence were very vocal about the free state cause Proslavery supporters got newspapers in Lawrence shut down They even burned two offices to the ground along with the homes of the several reporters

THE POTTAWATOMIE MASSACRE John Brown and a few others initiated a brutal attack on proslavery supporters, killing 5 men The violence in the Kansas Territory was beginning to make national news

BORDER RUFFIANS VS. JAYHAWKERS Missourians who voted illegally in Kansas elections were known as border ruffians Bushwhackers referred to the Missourians who made raids on antislavery settlements Kansans who attacked Missouri settlements were called jayhawkers

THE FATE OF JOHN BROWN Brown left Kansas after the Pottawatomie Massacre to free slaves on the east coast and start a slave rebellion He raided a federal arsenal for this rebellion but was caught and hanged He became a martyr for the abolitionist cause

ELECTION DAY The first election was rejected because of all of the fake votes The second election had fake votes as well (over half) resulting in a pro slavery legislature They made it illegal for anyone to speak against slavery The free staters decided to make their own government

TWO GOVERNMENTS IN KANSAS There were now two governments in Kansas and several cities set about creating a constitution In order to become a state, Kansas needed one constitution It did not seem likely that a compromise would be struck any time soon
