Focus Area 1) Supporting the disadvantaged and people with special, sometimes urgent, needs Aspinwall Meals on Wheels (provides so much more than a meal) Adequate nutrition is necessary for health, functionality and the ability to remain independent. Healthy eating can increase mental acuity, resistance to illness and disease, energy levels, immune system strength, recuperation speed, and the ability to manage chronic health problems. At the core of the Meals on Wheels service is a nutritious meal, companionship and a friendly smile. A volunteer arrives Monday through Friday. If there is no response at a customer's home, we follow up with phone calls to relatives, neighbors and ultimately the police, if necessary, to insure that nothing is amiss. Family Worship Center Wednesday Evening Family Dinners Every Wednesday evening there is an open invitation to local residents for supper. This service is provided from September through June serving a healthy meal to as many as 120 people of all ages weekly. When milk and juice is provided the cost for the meal is $1.00 per person At a cost of $120.00 per week for 36 weeks the estimated budget is $4,320. Circles Sharpsburg Circles Sharpsburg equips families with skills and strategies to improve the quality of life and be independent. Circles includes residents of Sharpsburg, Millvale, and O’Hara Township. Circle Leaders enjoy support from each other and from community volunteers in addressing employment, transportation, and childcare issues which hinder progress towards financial stability. Volunteers are matched with a family for long term mentoring and coaching. St Vincent dePaul Food Bank This food bank, affiliated with the Pittsburgh St. Vincent dePaul Society Conference, is based in Sharpsburg and primarily serves the Sharpsburg and nearby Aspinwall and O'Hara Township areas. It is entirely a volunteer based organization dependent on donations from individuals, local churches and other organizations. It provides food to support over 180 families, pre-qualified on the basis of need alone, with the total number increasing to over 200 families at differing times of the year.
