Maintaining Status US law divides all legal non-citizen U.S. residents into two categories- immigrants and non-immigrants. Monitoring is done through SEVIS to ensure that students are complying with the regulations. –Entries and exits to the U.S. are recorded –Schools must report specific events as they occur. It is ultimately the student’s responsibility to ensure compliance with U.S. laws including J-1 regulations so that J-1 status is maintained.

Guidelines for Maintaining J-1 status Study in the program listed on the DS-2019. Because J-1 status is program specific, changes of major are not allowable.

Can I work for more than one department? Yes, as long as your combined hours do not exceed the 20 hour per week limit

How are hours counted? Hours are counted from Sunday to Saturday in each week. You are responsible for ensuring that you do not exceed the 20 hour per week limit. Getting a Social Security Number The nearest SSA office is in Tupelo (45 minute drive from university). Others are located in/around Memphis. In-person application is required! Future Work Options Academic training- speak to your program sponsor about authorization –Allows for off-campus employment opportunities that are directly related to the program of study such as a summer internship
