Particles are always moving and always have energy. When an object is hot… the molecules are moving_____________. When an object is cold…the molecules are moving _____________.
4
Heat is the energy that the object has because the particles are moving. Temperature is a way of measuring heat energy.

What is heat? › Heat: Thermal energy moving from a warmer object to a cooler object. › When do you hear heat described? › Heat always travels from a __________ object to a ___________ object.
10
3 ways… › Conduction › Convection › Radiation
11
Heat transfers through a substance or from a substance to another by direct contact Examples: › Raw egg fries as it hits a heated frying pan › Metal spoon in pot of hot water
13
Heat transfer in liquids and gases as particles circulate in currents Example: › When the water at the bottom of a pot is heated, it moves to the top. As the water rises, the surrounding cooler water flows into place.
15
Transfer of heat through space in the form of waves. Example: › Radiation of heat from a bonfire or lamp › The heat from the sun
17
Conductor: material that transfers heat well. (pulls the heat to the outside) › Example: metals (stainless steel & silver) Insulator: material that does not transfer heat well. (keeps the heat in) › Example: wood, wool, straw, paper, gases
