Summary of the ECFA /ELCSG session and exhibition at ESOF 2004 Stockholm, 25.-28.8.04 Michael Kobel Bonn University Germany EPOG outreach meeting, CERN, 29.10.2004

Euro Science Open Forum 2004, Stockholm, 25.-28.8.2004 www.esof2004.org www.esof2004.org Aim: highlight science in Europe (similar as AAAS in America) present science and the humanities at the cutting-edge stimulate scientific awareness foster debate on science and society get scientists and media together Participants: total: 1800 from 68 countries (officially, never together on one day) academics research organisations (e.g. EIROforum) policy makers (some) politicians (very few) media (350 journalists) industry (mainly as exhibitors) teachers, public (not in sessions and exhibitions) 12 plenary sessions (partially in parallel) 60 parallel sessions (from 260 applications) science in the city

ECFA Session „From Quarks to Galaxies“ In the name of ECFA prepared by the outreach subcommittee coordinators of the ELCSG, in collaboration with EPOG 3talks „present status“+ discussion, 2 talks „future plans“ + discussion, 3h total 1.) Gerard t'Hooft: The Nature of Matter and Forces 2.) Licia Verde: The Cosmic Connection: From Quarks to Galaxies 3.) Ugo Amaldi: From Accelerators to Cancer Therapy 4.) Ulf Danielsson: Theories Spanning Time and Space of the Universe 5.) Albrecht Wagner: Pushing the Frontier: Tools for the next Decade http://www.teilchenphysik.org/temp_aktuell_aktivitaeten_elcsg.htm http://www.teilchenphysik.org/temp_aktuell_aktivitaeten_elcsg.htm talks well adjusted to each other (2 phone confs beforehand) right level of talks  45 min discussion invited: 60 „VIPs“ from 15 countries, attended: 4 from PL, HU, I, (D) too many sessions:  only about 70-80 people listening 1st discussion round

ESOF Press Briefing "The International Linear Collider Project: Europe's Vision for the Future of Particle Physics" One of about 10 Press briefings at ESOF 2004 Participants: G.‘t Hooft, M.Kobel, L.Verde, A.Wagner Moderated by Ranga Yogeshwar (German TV Journalist) Very timely (7 days after ITRP recommendation) Press folders prepared beforehand (well received) triggered some ESOF and ILC articles in German press

ECFA Exhibition „From cloud chambers to linear accelerators - tracking down the origin of matter“ 30 m 2 in nice „Pillared Hall“ (booth rent: 10,000 €) but: very much detached from the conference

Exhibition content Standard Model: cloud chamber (DESY) hands-on educational model of an accelerator (DESY) Wire model of DELPHI event (PPEP) Astroparticle physics 3D animated model of the Amanda detector (AMANDA, Stockholm) Hadron Therapy model of hadron dE/dx and HD cancer therapy center (GSI) Experimental Future ATLAS detector model and LHC panels (PPEP) TESLA cavity and posters (DESY) Posters, brochures, and movies (ATLAS, TESLA, XFEL, GSI therapy, AMANDA) KNowledge:TESLAdetector LHC Puzzle Higgs LHC Proton Collisions LHC Magnets and Detector LHC Puzzle Unif + SUSY Insight TESLA Facts&Figures Insight XFEL What it is Insight XFEL Research Knowledge TESLA Superconduc TrackingDown theOorigin ofmatter Title PosterExhibition An International Center of Excellence Two Sides ofthe same coin Plasmascreen withmovies Cloudchamber Linear Accelerator Model ATLASdetectormodel DELPHIwire eventmodel TESLAcavity 2 Posters from GSI onhadron therapy model of hadrontherapy center energy loss ofhadronshadron therapy 2 Posters fromAMANDA AMANDAdetectormodel Title PosterExhibition Particle Physics TESLA-DESY GSI LEP/LHC-CERN AMANDA Pillars

Exhibition features 5 Guides from GSI, Amanda, DESY Most expensive part of our activity Most complicated to organize (e.g. transport from 5 places) Most educative and most „hands-on“ exhibition of ESOF public admitted only in last few hours very difficult to find for conference participants those who came were very interested

Many Thanks to ELCSG Session Co-Organizers: Francois le Diberder, Giorgio Ciarelli, Phil Burrows, Phillip Bambade (+ Erik Johansson and Brian Foster) Exhibition Co-organizers: Ulrike Behrens, Christian Mrotzek (DESY), Valja Gebhardt (BN) Press folder support: Petra Folkerts, Christian Mrotzek (DESY) Exhibition Objects: Ulrike Behrens, Petra Folkerts, Christian Mrotzek (DESY), Wilma Weyrather (GSI), Per Olof Hulth (Amanda), Norman Gee (PPEP) Exhibition Guides: Blanka Sobloher, Christian Mrotzek (DESY), Amanda guides, Wilma Weyrather (GSI)

Summary First experience with AAAS-like event for ESOF central organizers ESOF session and exhibition organizers (us) ESOF participants our combination of session + press briefing + exhibition was nice could have been better exploited with better attendance (participants, VIPs, public) preparation needs very much work still, 2004 showed that ESOF concept works in principle especially well received by journalists many things to improve for ESOF2006 in Munich need more politicians and policy makers need more public, teachers, students need free access to exhibitions and some lectures reduced conference fee for full participation need less sessions /actvities in parallel proposals to be submitted already in spring/summer 05!
