Technology/Engineering Charlie Haffey Norwood Elementary Science

Goal Of Engineering To solve practical problems through the developed use of technologies, based on the scientific knowledge gained through investigation.

Focus Of Technology Applied technologies engineering design, construction, and transportation. Not on instructional technology such as computer applications for classrooms.

The Relationships Among Science, Technology and Engineering

ScienceEngineeringTechnology To understand the natural world,  new tools. Application of engineered designs. Engineers design products and processes to solve problems

PreK-2 Standards 1.Materials and Tools 2.Engineering Design

Materials and Tools Central Concept Materials both natural and human-made have specific characteristics that determine how they will be used.

Materials and Tools Standards Characteristics of natural materials vs human-made materials. Some possible uses for natural materials vs human-made materials. The safe and proper use of tools and materials to construct simple structures.

Engineering Design Central Concept Requires creative thinking and consideration of a variety of ideas to solve practical problems.

Engineering Design Standards Identify tools/simple machines used for a purpose, e.g., ramp, wheel, pulley, lever. Describe human body parts as tools (e.g., teeth for cutting, hands for catching), and compare to ways animals use those body parts.

3-5 Standards 1.Materials and Tools 2.Engineering Design

Materials and Tools Central Concept Appropriate materials, tools, and machines extend our ability to solve problems and invent.

Materials and Tools Standards Identify materials used to accomplish a design task based on a specific property. Identify/explain the appropriate materials and tools (e.g., hammer, screwdriver, pliers, tape measure, screws, nails to construct a prototype.

Materials and Tools Standards Identify and explain the difference between simple and complex machines, e.g., hand can opener that includes multiple gears, wheel, etc.

Engineering Design Central Concept Identify materials used to accomplish a design task based on a specific property, e.g., strength, hardness, and flexibility.

Engineering Design Standards Hardware Repeat of wording for standards 2 & 3 in PreK-2 Materials & Tools

Engineering Design Standards Problem Solving Identify a problem- need for shelter, storage, or convenience. Ways in which a problem can be shown, e.g., sketches, diagrams, and lists.

Engineering Design Standards Problem Solving Identify features (e.g., size, shape) for building a prototype of a solution. Compare natural/artificial systems e.g., a bird’s wings to airplane wings.
