6 First Impressions What are you wanting? What are they wanting? What qualities would make a candidate stand out for that scholarship/job? How can you demonstrate that you are the perfect candidate?

7 First Impressions Objective: name your intention be specific and professional don’t be wordy or personal OBJECTIVE: the health care departmental scholarship at NCTC focusing on volunteer work OBJECTIVE: a scholarship to provide me with money to pursue my goals OBJECTIVE: a sales position with Target including direct customer relations and generating new accounts OBJECTIVE: any job so I can get experience, make money and maybe buy a new car to get out of the house

8 First Impressions Profile: why you? Concise statement of your important qualities, achievments, abilities be strong and convincing don’t be vague or lie Include a short phrase describing yourself, followed by two or three additional statements of your skills, experiences, accomplishments, personal characteristics or interests

9 First Impressions Sample Profile: Highly motivated, creative, versatile high school senior with four years’ involvement in vocational activities. Especially skilled in welding and metal construction. Excellent public relations skills. Seeking a challenging position in auto body repair Academically top 25% high school senior with four years in college preparatory classes. Energetic self- starter with excellent organizational and creative skills

10 Evidence Experience: listing of jobs, internships, volunteer roles in reverse chronological order include job titles, name of company, dates of employment, brief description of duties Education: listing in reverse chronological order include name of institution, training and coursework, date or expected date of completion, academic awards

11 Evidence Leadership: listing of activities in reverse chronological order Include office held, name of organization, dates, brief description of your role in the activity Achievements: listing in reverse chronological order Include award, organization, date, brief explanation if needed

12 Guidelines for Better Presentation Simple clean structure Easy to read font style Consistent format in italics, bold, underlining, punctuation, spacing No errors in spelling, grammar, capitalization, information Avoid repetition Follow Weird Al’s advice
