Why focus on comprehension? Students need to go beyond decoding- reading the words in the text fluently. Any discussion you have about books is great, but asking deeper questions is important. Common core standards are much more demanding today.

Character Traits How would you describe Crab? How would you describe Lobster? What in the text makes you say that?

Author’s message Fables talk about the moral of the story. What do you think the author wants you to learn from this text?

If your child has difficulty… Model your own thinking. I saw this word and I wasn’t sure what it meant. I was thinking about the character and I thought he reminded me of… I think the author was trying to teach us….
