When sending an email to instructor or your peers... I like to read my email and attend to class responsibilities early in the morning. Therefore, if you post or send email late in the evening to me, you might not hear from me until the next morning. I will acknowledge email correspondence within 24 hours Monday through Friday and within 48 hours on weekends. To assist with tracking emails, it is recommended that all email subjects start with the course number (AB140), class section (15), your name and the reason for the email. This will enable me to define filters in email software to sort messages automatically. It also allows me to instantly track which course the student belongs. It is most appreciated, especially when I teach more than one class. 10 LD 2/2/2011 AB140

General Questions… LD 2/2/2011 AB140 11
12
Being an active participant… Overall, I cannot stress enough how important active participation is to your success in this course. Keeping up with the Unit learning activities/assignments, posting to the discussion area, participating in live KHE Seminars, and interacting with your fellow students (and me) will inevitably enhance your learning experience--and your grade. Forty percent (40%) of your grade depends on your referencing back to class reading when answering discussion questions or with assignments. Demonstrate to us all that you read the class material! How would you reference class reading? 12 LD 2/2/2011 AB140
13
Reminders Our Unit Discussions close at the end of each week (Tuesdays 11:59PM EST) and will not be available for any additional posting. Please meet your deadline (worth 12 points the first week). The status will be “Read Only” at the conclusion of a Unit. Please see class late policy on the syllabus for further information and grading rubrics for lost points if you miss a deadline. Take responsibility for your own grade. Interact with your peers on the discussion board and in Seminars. Ask your fellow classmates questions to generate interaction and solicit learning. LD 2/2/2011 AB140 13
14
Think… Think… Think… THINK of critical thinking as a way to EXPAND your thinking--actively thinking, RATHER THAN PASSIVELY GOING THROUGH THE MOTIONS; being open-minded, rather than closed-minded; ready to question, rather than simply allowing information to stand on its own merit; exploring and testing, rather than accepting and digesting. Think outside the box. Give it your ALL! 14 LD 2/2/2011 AB140
15
Unit 5 It will be here before you know it. Be prepared. Must have a grade of 65%. LD 2/2/2011 AB140 15

Receiving an “A” grade for discussions (See rubrics on syllabus) References were used and cited properly. In other words, in your discussion posts and all assignments, you MUST refer back to class Unit reading. Demonstrate that the material was read and understood. Give a quote or correct paraphrase, and then support your answers with your personal comments. Please place the cited source at the end of the proper sentence, like so; (KU Course, AB140, 2010). Do not forget your quotation marks! Otherwise, it can be considered plagiarism. All posts demonstrated analysis of the topic. In other words, do not just answer the question without reference to what you read in the class Unit or textbook reading. Try to use outside sources, as well. Tie-in class reading with your answer! Refer to Unit reading. You are answering these questions to demonstrate what you derived from the reading—so, demonstrate such! Initial post no later than Saturday, midnight EST. In other words, the answer to the Unit discussion question MUST be answered before the end of Saturday of that week for appropriate grade points. Spell check and proofread your work. Posts to your peers must be no less than 40-50 words. An “I like your post” is not acceptable and you will lose grade points. LD 2/2/2011 AB140 20
21
Receiving an “A” grade (continued) The original discussion post to be no less than 100 words. Make sure your answer to the Unit discussion question comes to at least 100 words. Microsoft Word will do a word count for you. Compose your answer in Microsoft Word and then cut and paste your answer to the discussion board. If you try and type directly in the discussion board, you may lose connection after a certain time and you would then have to start all over. Keep the interactions going by posting a question to your peers at the end of your discussion answer. Try to stump fellow classmates! Do not just post your answer to the Unit question and then never come back to that Unit. The instructor posts additional questions and your fellow classmates post questions. Read and answer all posts. Your grade may depend on it. Post on 3 different days. In other words, your answer to the discussion question is done before the end of Saturday, and then your posts to others must be on two different days. On your responses, address your fellow classmates by their name. I can not give you credit if I do not see with whom you are posting. LD 2/2/2011 AB140 21
22
Assignments Submitted through the class Dropbox. Other classmates cannot view your work. ALWAYS reference course reading material! Demonstrate in your answer that you read and understand the material. It is worth a large portion of your grade. Only documents in Microsoft Word will be accepted. The system does not read others. Document must end with.doc,.docx, or.rtf Do not type assignments into the comments section, nor send any work via email. Kaplan does not allow me to accept work by email. LD 2/2/2011 AB140 22
23
Unit Reviews (Testing your knowledge) Complete readings prior to taking review Multiple choice questions based on class reading Can take it multiple times (A quiz is different.) – Grade is final review submitted No access after unit closes out The Review grade is available one week after the unit closes out Be prepared for future Unit quizzes on Unit and textbook readings. Can take only one time! LD 2/2/2011 AB140 23

Tips to Succeed Work a little every day. Do NOT wait until the last minute. Computer issues might then make it impossible to meet the deadline. Complete the assigned readings BEFORE completing assignments Back-up all assignments and make sure your name is on the assignment and in the file name. Post discussions early in the week; first post by Saturday Actively participate and refer to class reading. Complete all tasks by the due date (Tuesday 11:59PM EST) Demonstrate respect for your peers LD 2/2/2011 AB140 24

Plagiarism Each week a little more is expected of ALL students. Remember: Do not plagiarize. Know how to paraphrase properly. The sentence structure and wording of a paraphrased item should NOT be close to the original without quotation marks. There should be no mistake that the material is the original text from YOU. Changing a few words from a borrowed text is plagiarism! So is using past work from another class. Keep in mind, instructors submit student work to a web-site that checks for plagiarism. Please see Kaplan’s policy on copyright infringement issues. The consequences can be detrimental to your goal (and unethical). 36 LD 2/2/2011 AB140
37
Instructor wants to get an “A” grade, too… An online satisfaction survey will be available to you (during final). You will be asked to rate your professor and the class. Your answers will be anonymous to me. Please answer these surveys to the best of your knowledge. Questions will be asked like; 1. Did the professor clearly state what was expected? 2. Did you receive helpful feedback from the professor? 3. Did the professor add value to the class discussions? 4. Were the professor’s grading standards appropriate? (Kaplan develops the grading rubric and class Units). LD 2/2/2011 AB140 37
