My values for this career are to have more than a decent amount of money, and be able to take care of my family. Tasks and responsibilities are finding the most suitable foundation for a proposed construction; researching and advising the best engineering solution to meet a client's needs and budget; preparing engineering calculations required for the design of projects, and supervising the drafting of plans. The civil engineering career requires you to work with data, people, and things. The numbers and math that are required to understand includes data, the people, or other engineers and architects you must communicate with, and supervising and using the tools and machinery. The working environment is either splitting time between offices and sites, or many sites. The working hours of a civil engineer is dividing their time between offices and the sites where their projects are worked on. You would normally work between 35 - 40 hours a week, Monday to Friday. If you are office-based, you are more likely to work a normal week, although some overtime may be required. On site, overtime and shift patterns could occasionally include evenings and weekends. You may also have to factor in traveling, and the site could be in a remote environment. You could be exposed to temperature and weather, and work around potentially hazardous equipment. Some jobs could also mean working at great heights and you’ll probably need protective clothing. At senior level, civil engineers could be working on multiple projects meaning more site visits.
