SIMPLE AND COMPOUND SENTENCES Simple sentence = one complete subject and one complete predicate May be a compound subject and/or compound predicate EXAMPLE: Plants breathe the air and absorb sunlight. Long strands of ivy curled around the window ledge. Ivy and juniper filled the flower boxes. Compound sentence = two or more simple sentences joined together EXAMPLE: Spring arrived late this year, but Mona’s garden was still pretty. Spring arrived late this year; Mona’s garden was still pretty. Spring arrived late this year; however, Mona’s garden was still pretty.

COMPLEX AND COMPOUND-COMPLEX SENTENCES Complex sentence = has an independent clause and one or more dependent clauses EXAMPLE: We played charades by candlelight when the electricity went out. Compound-Complex sentence = has more than one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses. EXAMPLE: Whenever we have an ice storm, the twins go skating, and I enjoy the peace.
