SMART TELEMAC: Past & Current Status of the Izmir Bay Inner Bay Middle Bay Outer Bay Gediz Delta Izmir Inner Bay Near Past Conditions (3 years ago): -There is no any treatment of waste water -Domestic and Industrial waste water -Small creeks discharge into the bay -Gediz River Pollution flows into the outer bay Near Past Status (3 years ago): -Highly Polluted Inner Bay -Polluted Middle Bay -Reasonably Less Polluted Outer Bay Now (2004): -There are two treatment plants -No Domestic and Industrial wastewater discharges -Small creeks discharge into the bay (still) -Gediz River Pollution flows into the outer bay (still) Current Status -Inner Bay started to recover itself -Reasonably clean Middle Bay -Clean Outer Bay

SMART TELEMAC: (conditions and problems) Inner Bay Middle Bay Outer Bay Gediz Delta Izmir Inner Bay There is no recent water quality measurements in the bay after treatment plants operated. Thus, initial conditions and calibration of the quality modeling look uncertain. (Assumption?) Cyclonic water movement in the Aegean sea effects the currents in the bay. Tidal currents are not major components of the currents in the bay (max 0.15m). Thermoclin exists. There are two horizontal water layer during the spring and summer time. Currents are quite different in these layer at the same time. In winter time, due to the wind forces water column can be considered as homogeneous. Due to the NNE wind forces there is downwelling through the south coast of the bay. Comprehensive modeling of the currents and water quality of the bay with existing data, look difficult. Thus, the modeling efforts will be continued now, under several assumptions and simplifications.

SMART WATERWARE: Current Status of the Gediz River Basin (Institutional, essential tasks) Indicates no water quality control in all domain
15
SMART WATERWARE: Current Status of the Gediz River Basin (Institutional) There has been very limited planning at the basin level with respect to surface water and virtually none for groundwater and waste disposal Water is allocated, in practice, by a variety of agencies and users operating independently of each other. Water quality monitoring takes place, but information is often not available in useful forms to interested parties. Ensuring surface water and groundwater quality is not actively practiced in the Gediz basin. No attention is currently paid to the quality of agricultural return flows. NGOs have no role in performing essential management functions, but clearly have an important role to play in overall basin governance. Example of examining the previous essential task matrices.
