Linear Motion Lab setup Title: Purpose: Linear Motion Lab To learn what type of motions will create what shapes of lines on distance vs time graphs

Hypothesis: Moving away Moving towards Holding still Speeding up Slowing down Steady speed 1. _____________ while ______________ 2. 3. 4. 5. While

Possible line shapes One part going upOne part going downOne part curving up One part going straightOne part curving down

Procedure: 1.Create a graph and write the steps for the hypothesis 2.As a group, determine what movements will create each of the lines that were given (7 line key) Have your key checked off by your teacher

3. Use the key to determine what movements will actually create the lines on your hypothesis graph 4. Now prove your new steps by using them to create your graph on the computer and draw it as it looks on the computer

Data: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 7 line key Moving away Moving towards Holding still Speeding up Slowing down Steady speed While ______________ while __________________

Actual steps for my hypothesis graph using the key 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. _______________ while ______________

Computer graph

Analysis: 1. Look back at the steps for your hypothesis. Where was your hypothesis right? Where was it wrong? 2. What label and units go on the side of the graph? What label and units go on the bottom? 3. Which variable is dependent? Independent?

4. Now that you know a bit more about graphing, look back at your hypothesis steps and carefully draw a graph for actually following those steps that you first wrote. 5. Some of the graphs on the computer had weird spikes or jumps. What do you think these are and how do you think we should deal with them?

Conclusion: For your conclusion, explain in your own words, the 3 most important things you need to know to read a graph accurately. Tell me what you’ve learned from this lab and 1 specific way this will help you in life.
