5.  Acceleration - is the rate at which velocity changes  Velocity – is speed and direction  Acceleration therefore encompasses an increase or decrease in speed or change in direction

6.  Increase in speed is referred to as acceleration or positive acceleration – a runner starting a race would be positive acceleration  Decrease in speed is referred to as negative acceleration – a car slowing down would be negative acceleration  A change in direction – a car changing lanes would be a change in direction therefore a change in acceleration
