For the picture below write a paragraph on what motion occurred to get to this exact moment of the baseball game. Words to use in your paragraph: ◦ Motion ◦ Speed ◦ Acceleration ◦ Velocity ◦ Force ◦ Safe or out
3
Describe what happens to the motion of an object as it accelerates Calculate the acceleration of an object and graph changing speed and distance of an accelerating object
4
Acceleration Linear Nonlinear
5
Acceleration - is the rate at which velocity changes Velocity – is speed and direction Acceleration therefore encompasses an increase or decrease in speed or change in direction
6
Increase in speed is referred to as acceleration or positive acceleration – a runner starting a race would be positive acceleration Decrease in speed is referred to as negative acceleration – a car slowing down would be negative acceleration A change in direction – a car changing lanes would be a change in direction therefore a change in acceleration
7
To calculate acceleration you must know the velocity during different periods of time Acceleration = final velocity – initial velocity divided by time Formula to calculate acceleration: SEE ELMO
8
Graphs are used to analyze the motion of an object A straight line reflects constant acceleration A curved line reflects a change in acceleration A straight line shows a linear relationship – as each unit of time increase the distance increases by the same amount in each unit of time A curved line is nonlinear – as each init of time increase the distance does not increase by the same amount in each unit of time
10
Acceleration is a change in velocity Three types of acceleration – increase in speed, decrease in speed, or change in direction Acceleration is easily shown on a graph
