Lesson Title: Track Your Family Water Usage Subject Area:Math and Science Grade Level:Fourth Overview
4
Lesson Objective Familiarize students; Importance & usage of water in human life. With measurement of volume of liquid. Help students; Practice collects the data from day-to-day life. Understand and apply the measurement in the real-world. Record the information using technology. To process data and report results. Use technology resources to solve problems.
5
Lesson Summary Following aspect to be taught to the students; Importance of water in human life. How to measure water and its units. Write a report, analyze, plot (excel) and compare their findings
6
Importance of water in human life Water is of extreme importance to living organisms. It plays an important role in the sustenance of life; It is an important active constituent of living matter It serves as a metabolite in many processes. It is a universal solvent and a medium of transport
7

Measurement devices Portable water meter
11
Volume Measurement
12
How to measure a liquid (water) Water is usually measured by volume; In Gallons (US) In Liters (other countries) How to calculate water quantity in a swimming pool? Volume (gallon) = Width (ft) * Depth (ft) * Length (ft) For example = volume of water required for pool Length of pool = 100 fts Depth of pool = 10 fts Width of pool is = 20 fts Total volumes of water required for pool will be; Volume (Gallons) = 20 (width) * 10 (depth) * 100 (length) = 20, 000 gallons Length = 100 fts width = 20 fts Depth = 10 fts # I cubic ft = I gallon
13
Technology usage for measurement And Task of the day
14
How to measure general usage? Students to open Internet Explorer, and visit the U.S Geological Survey (USGS) Web site (http://ga.water.usgs.gov/edu/sq3.html).http://ga.water.usgs.gov/edu/sq3.html
15
Website - http://ga.water.usgs.gov/edu/sq3.html Website Preview for water usage
16
Task of the day Student to follow a series of steps to measure water consumption of their family on coming Saturday: Use internet resources websites Water consumption by each family member Compute in office Excel 2007 using template with 100% accuracy Student to compare the usage with to the others in the class with 95% accuracy Student will judge & suggest the ways to conserve the water usage
17
Result Compilation
18
Consumption of water by each member (gallons) # Get the consumption under each category through website
19
Sample – once we get all calculations from website # pie chart of water usage (%)

Conservation Method
21
Conservation tips When washing dishes by hand, don't let the water run while rinsing. Fill one sink with wash water and the other with rinse water. Some refrigerators, air conditioners and ice- makers are cooled with wasted flows of water. Consider upgrading with air-cooled appliances for water savings. Adjust sprinklers so only lawn is watered and not the house, sidewalk, or street. Run your clothes washer and dishwasher only when they are full. You can save up to 1,000 gallons a month. Install covers on pools and spas and check for leaks around your pumps.
