1 Language Arts Mrs. McDowell and Mrs. P (Mrs. Bunyard) Reading Workshop- During the reading workshop, students will focus on reading strategies, novel studies through Book Clubs, independent reading, guided reading, and reading responses.Reading Workshop- During the reading workshop, students will focus on reading strategies, novel studies through Book Clubs, independent reading, guided reading, and reading responses. Writing Workshop- Students will focus on the writing process while working on expanding and supporting their writing ideas, through self reflection, peer feedback, and teacher conferences.Writing Workshop- Students will focus on the writing process while working on expanding and supporting their writing ideas, through self reflection, peer feedback, and teacher conferences. Homework Expectations: Reading 20-30 minutes a night (Book Club book most likely), Studying States and Capitals, Unfinished Classwork, STAAR Passages beginning in January (No parent help on these, please.)

2 We expect that all students are reading at least 20-30 minutes a night and recording onto their take home reading log. 5th grade students will earn a sticker on their class chart for the following amount of books completed: They must record the books on their Speeding to Read log at home or at school. Both will be checked periodically and sticker charts updated. Turn 1: October 22 nd - 6 books read Turn 2: December 15th – 5 books read Turn 3: March 10th. - 8 books read Turn 4: May 5th. - 6 books read

3 5 th graders can use a total of 4 graphic novels = 2 chapter books as part of their 25 books.

Geography Citizenship Government History Economics Culture Technology Social studies will be incorporated into the language arts curriculum as much as possible. DBQ Document Based Questioning *Jamestown *Constitution *Gold Rush

5 States and Capitals Memorization of the states, capitals, and their locations will be part of 5 th grade Social Studies this year in NISD. Students will do several activities in our morning ELA Block each six weeks to introduce the new states to be practiced. Students will then be responsible for studying this information and being prepared for the test. Dates for each test will be given 4-5 weeks in advance. States are cumulative. They will need to continue to practice the previous states tested.
