3 LITERACY Balanced Approach to Literacy The balanced literacy approach includes several components of reading. These components include: * word study * interactive read alouds * independent reading (based on independent reading levels) * book clubs * skills and strategies * conferencing It is our goal to provide our students with rich literature that will create a passion for reading and writing.

4 WRITING Clarification Persuasive Argumentative Research projects Poetry Writing is across the curriculum: science, social studies and math.

5 SOCIAL STUDIES Social Studies is integrated with literacy this year. We use a social studies book entitled Social Studies Alive! We will be covering from pre-Columbian times to the American Civil war.

6 Science Science is an EOG for fifth grade. Students receive science instruction five times a week. We are integrating science informational texts into our literacy block. Please check out the school website for a full list of science vocabulary. Forces and Motion Matter Energy Weather/Climate Human Body Ecosystems Evolution/Genetics Units of study

7 MATH We are using the Investigations program. Curriculum: * Multiplication and Division * Fractions (major focus in 5th grade) * Decimals * Volume * Geometry (minor focus this year) * Graphing/Ordered Pairs
