Computer Science: So What Is It, Really? CS2190, CS Seminar Week 1: Jan 21, 2010

Physics 1. The scientific study of matter, energy, space, and time, and of the relations between them. 2. The behavior of a given physical system, especially as understood by a physical theory.

Biology The science of life and of living organisms, including their structure, function, growth, origin, evolution, and distribution. It includes botany and zoology and all their subdivisions.

Economics The social science that deals with the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services and with the theory and management of economies or economic systems.

Sociology The study of human social behavior, especially the study of the origins, organization, institutions, and development of human society. Analysis of a social institution or societal segment as a self-contained entity or in relation to society as a whole.

Engineering Civil engineering includes the planning, designing, construction, and maintenance of structures and altering geography to suit human needs. Some of the numerous subdivisions are transportation (e.g., railroad facilities and highways); hydraulics (e.g., river control, irrigation, swamp draining, water supply, and sewage disposal); and structures (e.g., buildings, bridges, and tunnels). Electrical engineering encompasses all aspects of electricity from power engineering, the development of the devices for the generation and transmission of electrical power, to electronics. Electronics is a branch of electrical engineering that deals with devices that use electricity for control of processes. Subspecialties of electronics include computer engineering, microwave engineering, communications, and digital signal processing. It is the engineering specialty that has grown the most in recent decades. Mechanical engineering is concerned with the design, construction, and operation of power plants, engines, and machines. It deals mostly with things that move. One common way of dividing mechanical engineering is into heat utilization and machine design. The generation, distribution, and use of heat is applied in boilers, heat engines, air conditioning, and refrigeration. Machine design is concerned with hardware, including that making use of heat processes.

Systems Engineering ????

Systems Engineering (INCOSE) Systems Engineering is an interdisciplinary approach and means to enable the realization of successful systems. It focuses on defining customer needs and required functionality early in the development cycle, documenting requirements, then proceeding with design synthesis and system validation while considering the complete problem.

Systems Engineering A management technology involving the interactions of science, an organization, and its environment as well as the information and knowledge bases that support each. The purpose of systems engineering is to support organizations that desire improved performance. This improvement is generally obtained through the definition, development, and deployment of technological products, services, or processes that support functional objectives and fulfill needs. Systems engineering has triple bases: a physical (natural) science basis, an organizational and social science basis, and an information science and knowledge basis. (Sci-Tech Encyclopedia)

Systems Engineering Wikipedia: Systems engineering is an interdisciplinary field of engineering that focuses on how complex engineering projects should be designed and managed. Issues such as logistics, the coordination of different teams, and automatic control of machinery become more difficult when dealing with large, complex projects. Systems engineering deals with work-processes and tools to handle such projects, and it overlaps with both technical and human-centered disciplines such as control engineering and project management.

What Is Computer Science? Could you write a similar definition for CS? – Any CpEs? Could you write this for CpE? Exercise: – Think of your ideas about this. Jot down some notes. – Next, discuss with 2 or 3 neighbors. – Write up a definition! (Get teams’ names.) – You’ll submit to the CS2190 website before next week. (Instructions to come.)

Next Week We’ll look at these. We’ll look at others’ definitions of CS and CpE. You’ll have read an article, which we’ll use to… Discuss what a ideal Intro to CS course(s) might look like

Reading for Next Week Computational Thinking, Jeannette M. Wing (Carnegie Mellon and NSF) http://www.cs.cmu.edu/afs/cs/usr/wing/ww w/publications/Wing06.pdf Questions to think about: – Have you learned these things in your CS courses? – Would you (how would you) structure an Intro to CS course(s) based on these ideas?
