Have a Go Complete the following tasks independently: 1.Locate the water feature 700m SW of Aorere college and draw a polygon around it. Change the opacity to 50% and the colour to blue. Rename it ‘Water Feature’ 2.Using the ruler calculate the distance i.From the water features southern-most tip to its Northern-most tip ii.From the Motorway Massey road over bridge to the water feature’s closest point 3.Draw a path around the water feature 4.Find a volcanic feature near this location and draw a path around it’s outer edge – what is it’s circumference? HINT: This feature appears ‘flat’

Extra Task: Site Selection The Auckland City Council want to build a new Sports Facility in the Mangere/Papatoetoe area to house the 2015 Secondary School Volleyball Champs You are tasked with finding the best spot for the venue based on the following criteria: – Can only be built in vacant/parkland (no buildings are to be demolished, especially schools! – Must be within 2km from SH20 (in straight line) – Must be within 6km of the Airport (in straight line) Use your Google Earth skills (ruler, search, etc.) to come up with the best location. Then ‘pin’ it with an appropriate symbol and in the description box (found in the pin’s properties) give the reasons for your choice.

Lesson 4:What are we doing Today? LO) You can use computer applications to create a spatial analysis layout SC) you can use Snipping Tool, Word functions (header and footer, text box, drawing), and the following websites to extract information from: – Koordinates.com – Statistics.govt.nz – Topomap.co.nz Do Now: Logon and load Google Earth, MS Word, and a web browser ready to go

The Magic Tool… Find the Snipping Tool from the programs menu This allows you to capture what you see on screen by simply drawing a box around what you want The you can copy and paste it into a file Have a go “snipping” your house into a worddoc

Creating an Elevation Profile Right click on the path you have created and select show elevation profile Have a go: create an elevation profile of Mt Tongariro Screenshot it and paste it into your word doc of Google Earth practice. Ensure it has a title!

Getting around MS Word Use the ‘insert’ tab to add text boxes, page breaks and shapes such as a North arrow or a circles See how many words you have typed When you paste in an image: Right click > Wrap Text > Square Press F7 to run a spell check, but still proof read! Paste your screenshots from the ‘snipping tool’ Use the ‘page layout’ tab to a) make your margins narrow to fit more and b) select landscape orientation
