TRANSFER Meaning: A transfer is a change in job assignment. It does not imply any promotion or demotion, any change in the status or responsibility of employees. Definition: Edwin B. Flippo: “Transfer is a change in job where the new job is substantially equal to the old in terms of pay status and responsibilities.”

REASONS FOR TRANSFER Variation in the volume of work. Providing training to employees Rectification of poor placement Satisfying personal needs of employees Meeting mutual needs of employees Meeting organizational needs Solution to poor performance Avoiding fatigue and monotony Giving punishment for negligence Rectification of poor personal relations Providing convenience to employees To provide relief and to punish employees

TYPES OF TRANSFERS Basis of purpose Production Transfer Replacement Transfer Versatility Transfer Shift Transfer Remedial Transfer

On the basis of purpose. 1) Production Transfers:- As mentioned earlier, a shortage or surplus of the labour force is common in different departments in a plant or several plants in an organization. Surplus employees in a department have to be laid off, unless they are transferred to another department. 2) Replacement Transfers:- Replacement transfers, too, are intended to avoid imminent lay-offs, particularly, of senior employees. A junior employee may be replaced by a senior employee to avoid laying off the latter. 3) Versatility Transfers:- Versatility transfers are effected to make employees versatile and competent him more than one skill. Clerical employees in banks, for example, are transferred from one section to another over a period of time so that they may acquire the necessary skills to attend to the various activities, at the bank.

. 4) Shift Transfers:- Generally speaking, industrial establishments operate more than one shift. Transfers between shifts are common, such transfers being made mostly on a rotation basis. Transfers may also be affected on special requests from employees. 5) Remedial Transfers:- Remedial transfers are affected at the request of employees and are, therefore, called personal transfers. Remedial transfers take place because the initial placement of an employee may have been faulty or the worker may not get along with his or her supervisor or with other workers in the department.

TYPES OF TRANSFERS CONTINUED…… Basis of Unit Sectional Transfer Department- al Transfer Inter-Plant Transfer

On the basis of unit.  Sectional transfer: these transfers are made within the department from one section to another, mainly to train and prepare workers to handle the operations of different sections of the department.  Departmental transfer: transfer of employees from one department to another within the organization.  Inter-plant transfer: if an organization has more than one plant under its control,it can transfer its employees from one plant to another.

RIGHTSIZING OF EMPLOYEES Meaning: It refers to employing and maintaining exact number of employees with required skills, abilities and knowledge to perform the existing number of jobs in an organisation.
