5 What does it mean to be a Title I School? Being a Title I school means receiving federal funding (Title I dollars) to supplement the school’s existing programs. These dollars are used for… –Identifying students experiencing academic difficulties and providing timely assistance to help these student’s meet the State’s challenging content standards. –Purchasing supplemental staff/programs/materials/supplies –Conducting parental Involvement meetings/trainings/activities –Recruiting/Hiring/Retaining Highly Qualified Teachers Being a Title I school also means parental involvement and parents’ rights.

6 What is the 1% set-aside and how are parents involved? Any LEA with a Title I Allocation exceeding $500,000 is required by law to set aside 1% of it’s Title I allocation for parental involvement. Of that 1%, 5% may be reserved at the LEA for system-wide initiatives related to parental involvement. The remaining 95% must be allocated to all Title I schools in the LEA. Therefore each Title I school receives its portion of the 95% to implement school-level parental involvement. You, as Title I parents, have the right to be involved in how this money is spent.

7 What is the LEA Title I Plan? The LEA Title I Plan addresses how the LEA will use Title I funds throughout the school system. Topics include: –Student academic assessments –Additional assistance provided struggling students –Coordination and integration of federal funds and programs –School programs including pre-school, school choice, and supplemental educational services as applicable. –Parental Involvement Strategies, including the LEA Parental Involvement Policy. You, as a Title I Parent, have a right to be involved in the development of the LEA Title I Plan

8 What is the CMS Parental Involvement Plan? This plan addresses how the LEA will implement the parental involvement requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. It includes… –The LEA’s expectations for parents –How the LEA will involve parents in decision-making –How the LEA will work to build the schools’ and parents’ capacity for strong parental involvement to improve student academic achievement You, as Title I parents, have the right to be involved in the development of this plan.

9 What is a SIP? The SIP is your School Improvement Plan and includes: –A Needs Assessment and Summary of Data –Goals and Strategies to Address Academic Needs of Students –Professional Development Needs –Coordination of Resources/Comprehensive Budget –The School’s Parental Involvement Plan You, as Title I parents, have the right to be involved in the development of this plan.

10 What’s included in the School’s Parental Involvement Plan? This plan addresses how the school will implement the parental involvement requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. Components include… –How parents can be involved in decision-making and activities –How parental involvement funds are being used –How information and training will be provided to parents –How the school will build capacity in parents and staff for strong parental involvement You, as Title I parents, have the right to be involved in the development of your school’s Parental Involvement Plan.

11 What is the School-Parent Compact? The compact is a commitment from the school, the parent, and the student to share in the responsibility for improved academic achievement You, as Title I Parents, have the right to be involved in the development of the School-Parent Compact.

12 How do I request the qualifications of my child’s teachers? You, as Title I Parents, have the right to request the qualifications of your child’s teachers How are you notified of this right and the process for making such request? (Explain Procedure)

13 How will I be notified if my child is taught by a teacher who is not Highly Qualified? Our school’s present status of Highly Qualified Teachers Notification to parents regarding teachers not meeting NCLB’s requirements for Highly Qualified How parents are notified

14 How is the evaluation of the CMS Parental Involvement Policy Conducted? Evaluation Requirements –Conduct annually –Conduct with Title I parents –Analyze Content and Effectiveness of the current plan –Identify Barriers to parental involvement –Data/Input may include… Parent Survey (Required) Focus Groups Parent Advisory Committees Process and Timeline The evaluation informs next year’s plan

15 School Improvement Planning Establish an understanding of the “big picture” of our school’s current state, including student achievement, school environment, teacher community, parent community, and administrative issues; Reach a consensus across our school’s community on which needs represent the highest priorities for action based upon the potential to improve overall student and school performance; and Identifying implementation goals and strategies, including specific targets, indicators, and milestones required to address our school’s priorities.

16 Do we offer “Choice/SES”? If your school is in year 1 or more of sanctions you will offer Choice and SES (Supplemental Educational Services.) Supplemental Educational Services (SES) are extra academic services, such as tutoring, offered outside of regular school hours free of cost to low-income students attending qualifying Title I schools. Choice- Children are eligible for school choice when the Title I school they attend has not made adequate yearly progress in improving student achievement--- as defined by the state--for two consecutive years or longer and is therefore identified as needing improvement, corrective action or restructuring. Any child attending such a school must be offered the option of transferring to a public school in the district--including a public charter school--not identified for school improvement, unless such an option is prohibited by state law. No Child Left Behind requires that priority in providing school choice be given to the lowest achieving children from low- income families.

17 AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) All schools are measured according to AYP. AYP measures reading/language arts and math yearly progress by student group and school against state target goals. Enter your school’s data here for AYP targets made and not made.

18 AYP measures the progress of 10 student groups The School as a Whole White Black Hispanic Native American Asian/Pacific Islander Multiracial Students with disabilities Students with limited English Proficiency Economically disadvantaged students Each group must meet the set percentage of students performing at grade level in each subject.

19 How can I volunteer to assist my student with school needs? Join the School Improvement Team Volunteer to contact other parents regarding important school information. Ex. – 100% Compact completion Stuff envelops Talk to your neighbors and let them know what is going on at your child’s school. Contact our office at ___________ to volunteer.
