The Iditarod started because kids started to get a disease called Diphtheria. The medicine was super far away. Vehicles couldn’t get through the snow, so they decided to start a sled dog race so that if one sled doesn’t make it, there are still lots of other sleds still in the race to deliver the medicine to the doctor for the sick kids.

The dogs wear booties and harnesses Equipment: harnesses They used Huskies and any other sort of Alaskan dogs. You have 16 dogs at the beginning of the race.

The routes are different this year because there isn’t as much snow as there’s suppose to have. They start at Anchorage The race ends at Nome The Iditarod is 1049 miles There are 19 checkpoints

PenAir Spirit of Alaska Award-presented to the first musher to reach McGrath. Wells Fargo Bank Alaska Gold Coast Award- present to the first musher to reach the “Gold Coast” community of Unalakleet. Red Lantern Award is given to the last musher to arrive.
